Lawrence Tubb currently teaches music at St. Antony's Leweston School, Sherborne, Dorset. He was educated first at Salesian College in Farnborough, at which time he also received a scholarship to attend the Royal College of Music Junior Department studying piano, violin and composition. From there, he moved to Charterhouse School where his love of choral music began, singing under Mark Blatchly in the school's Chapel and Chamber Choirs. As a member of the Burczyk Singers, Lawrence was able to get his first experience of choral conducting.
As an undergraduate choral scholar at Worcester College, Oxford, Lawrence continued to sing choral music on a regular basis and also joined a secular choir, Musica Beata. He became conductor of the Worcester College Orchestra and Chorus, holding both posts through to the start of his final exams. Works performed with these ensembles include Beethoven Symphony No, 6 (Pastoral) and Egmont Overture, Albinoni Adagio, Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Greensleaves, Elgar Chanson de matin and Chanson de nuit, Bach motet Jesu, meine Freude, Parry Blest Pair of Sirens, and some lighter choral repertoire such as Purple Dreams, Autumn Leaves and Elmer's Tune.
Lawrence moved to Yeovil in 2003 to take up his post at St. Antony's Leweston and immediately joined the Sherborne Chamber Choir, with whom he has enjoyed singing a number of very memorable concerts. He became Musical Director of the Silton Singers in January 2004, and has enjoyed his time working with them enormously. With a great commitment from everyone involved, Lawrence and the members have raised the standard of music-making over their two and a half years together and the choir continues to go from strength to strength. Recent performances have included 1,000 Years of Christmas, Stainer Crucifixion, Wood Passion according to St. Mark, a concert of Shakespeare Songs, and a concert of English Romantic Partsongs. The schedule for this coming year includes Fauré Requiem, Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio, Mozart Coronation Mass and Vivaldi Credo.
During the first half of 2006, Lawrence took part in the ABCD (Association of British Choral Directors) Intermediate Conducting Course, studying with Peter Broadbent, Colin Durrant and Jo McNally, and learned a great deal about choral conducting and voice training.
Lawrence is currently planning two new ventures. The first is the formation of the Phoenix Voices, a new choir bringing together many excellent musicians from Somerset and Dorset. The inaugural concert ("Sacred Tongues") will be on Sunday 8th October 2006, 7pm at St. Antony's Leweston School Chapel, Longburton, Dorset and will feature music by Kodály, Janacék, Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn, Fauré and Britten. The other - a longer term plan - is to create a Youth Choir for 11-16 year olds in Yeovil, Somerset.
